This is a representation of a Hopi Kachina Spirit, who dwells atop the San Francisco Peaks, in Northern Arizona.
Beware, the child who misbehaves, for this and other fearsome ogres will come for you during the Kachina Ceremonies. Your grandmother will have to trade groceries and other gifts, as well as solemn promises for your improved behavior in order to secure your release.

This is a representation of a Cow Kachina, one of the many Kachinas who dwell high atop the San Francisco Peaks in Northern Arizona. Dancing and chanting, the Kachinas visit the Hopi Villages during the first half of the year, bringing blessings and carrying away gifts and prayers for fertility and rain.. The name Wakas comes from the Spanish, Vacas, or cows.

This Chaveyo Kachina is from the Heard Museum collection, in Phoenix. It represents an Ogre Kachina Spirit believed to dwell atop the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona. I especially like him for the cleverly painted abstraction of a cowboy shirt that he is wearing. I apologize for the quality of this image, and I'll get it re-photographed as soon as possible.

The experts have labeled this Kachina a Kweo, or Wolf Kachina. Having been face to face with a Mountain Lion on a moonless night, however, I prefer to think of it as a Mountain Lion Kachina. It is in my own private collection.
These are Wolf, or Kweo, Kachinas. To me the complete lack of a snout is an indication that the Kachina above is something other than Kweo. Because each of the Hopi Villages features different versions of each Kachina, and because of differences due to time and individuality among carvers, it is often difficult to accurately identify a doll.

This is a Hopi Kachina doll. It represents the spirit of the female Shalako Kachina. It would be danced by a man, however, as only men perform in the Kachina Ceremonies. Mana denotes feminine. Shalako is the Kachina that bestows blessings on new homes and construction. Featured in KATSINA, the new book by Zena Pearlstone, from UCLA's Fowler Museum. SHALAK' MANA, CALAK' MANA (alternate spellings)

ZUÑI VELVET SHIRT KACHINA
John Farnsworth
Watercolor / 10" x 14"
NFS
This Zuñi Velvet Shirt Kachina is from my own private collection. It represents a period of time during the late 1930's and 1940's, when the Zuñi dressed their Kachina Dolls in elaborate costumes comprised of real materials. Less reliance was placed on painting the costumes onto the figures, unlike those of the Hopi, who tended more toward painted features and costumes. I have painted this doll a few times, and will surely paint it several more times, from different angles, and in different light.
